Speaker: Laurent Barbeau, Principal Consultant

Career summary: Mr. Laurent Barbeau, Principal Consultant, has directed over 100 improvement projects in manufacturing and service sectors. He has acquired hands on experience working in Lean Enterprise environments since 1985, first as the owner of a company located in Vancouver, specializing in the assembly, delivery and installation of electronic equipment serving both Canadian and US markets. Later in his career, he applied his experience and expertise as a business consultant working in Quality Management, Lean Manufacturing, Process Reengineering, Six Sigma projects and implementation of Continuous Improvement programs. Laurent has worked as a consultant since 1994 in Canada and abroad. He has managed mandates in the private sector, primarily in manufacturing and in the service industry. He has accumulated several experiences in the public sector, re-engineering processes for several government agencies in Tunisia and Algeria. Most recently, Laurent has been implementing the Lean approach in the Healthcare sector. Laurent has rounded off his experience with various courses in improvement work shop facilitation, adult training, Change Management, Lean Six Sigma certifications and Lean Production at the University of Cincinnati.

Title: Lean Six Sigma Design for new Healthcare facilities: How the Lean Six Sigma approach can deliver a new Healthcare or Service facility conducive to efficiency and effectiveness for its entire life span

Abstract: Healthcare organizations around the world are continually challenged to improve effectiveness and efficiency in their service delivery. Clinical evidence clearly shows that patient and family centric processes are producing better results in terms of patient welfare and staff-patient interactions. Consequently, leading healthcare authorities are now requiring that clinical Evidence Based Design and work organization Best Practices such as Lean be integrated at the earliest phase of a new facility design to ensure that the new environment is robustly conducive to patient care efficiency and effectiveness. The presentation will provide insight on the key success factors of Lean Healthcare facility design, the “How to” step by step approach as well as its integration with the “Charette” process used by architects and designers. The author, a long time practitioner of Lean and Six Sigma, will also share his thoughts on the role of the Lean consultant in design projects and the future of Lean Design in Healthcare and other Service facilities.

Talk 2: 7-7:45 pm

Speakers: Ken Jackson and Richard Schuller, Data Realm Software Inc.

Career summary: Ken Jackson has many years experience in developing software that include advanced scheduling and optimization capabilities. Ken holds a M.Math from the University of Waterloo and Ph.D. in Computing Science from Simon Fraser and was the technical lead in the development of a rig scheduling system.  Richard Schuller has over 14 years of experience in software development. He has applied his technology know-how and has deployed software to clients such as IBM, Telus, Saudi Aramco, and Repsol YPF S.A.

Title: Scheduling of Oil and Gas Drilling Operations
Abstract: This talk describes some of the technical and non-technical issues that we faced in developing and deploying software to help schedule drilling rigs. Scheduling rigs to minimizing travel distances and costs while ensuring all operations are completed on-time by appropriate rigs has similarities to scheduling and vehicle routing problems as studied in operations research. We’ll describe the these similarities and highlight some complexities in modeling this problem. We’ll then discuss some of the non-technical issues that arose when deploying the software to clients.

Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

Talk 3: “Performance Management in Airline Operations”
Speaker: Anna Gordon, Managing Director, Alaska Airlines System Operations Control
Anna Gordon is a 27 year employee of locally based Alaska Airlines, responsible for daily tactical Operations Performance (on time operations, cancellations, disruption management) as well as ongoing analysis of key operational performance indicators. Anna started her career on the front line at the airport handling customers and load control, transferring into the SOC as part of the Crew Scheduling group, with other roles in labor negotiations, and flight scheduling.
Jim Thorp, Manager, Operational Research and Analysis will also be joining in the discussion.
Airline operations are impacted by a number of significant and seemingly “uncontrollable” factors (weather, government regulations, airport and airspace congestion); our focus is on better understanding and developing predictive capabilities of these factors, and better management of those performance metrics that are clearly under our control (ground performance, block targets, flight schedules.)

Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
